Canon personal copierJul 17, 2010 This is my 2nd Canon personal copier in 25 years. The first (PC1) lasted 25 years of frequent use, then finally broke beyond repair. Based on excellent results from the PC1, I chose the PC170. Shipping was fast, setup was a breeze, it operates very well, and I expect many years of service. My only problem is the "automatic mode" seems to make copies that are too light for record keeping or sharing with others. Thus, I often use the manual method to avoid a copy being too light. It also takes up a lot of room on the table, but that is because I leave the input and output trays laying down. The instruction book is thorough. All my Canon experiences have been exemplary. For color printouts, I wish I had a Canon inkjet instead of Epson which has many idiosyncracies.
Good home copierJun 02, 2010 The copier was very easy to set up and works great. I was surprised that the toner cartridge from my older copier also works in the PC 170. Not changing the toner will save money. A very good copier for home use. My previous home copier was also a Cannon and it worked fine for many years, that is why I decided to buy another one.
Big footprint, not portable, breaks if being moved too oftenMay 18, 2010 I bought a new Canon PC-170 in April 2009. It broke in September 2009. The top part of PC-170 is a flatbed scanner that slides back and forth while making photocopies. The sliding scanner stopped working and made a clicking sound. I called Canon customer support, which did NOT informed me that I could have received a replacement via UPS or FedEx. Instead, Canon wanted me to take the machine to some contracted third-party repair center, where I waited for almost an hour to speak to a service technician. I left the photocopier at the service center, and waited for almost a month to get it back.
As I was told, PC-170 has one too many moving part. I used it as a portable copier for my work, so I carried it in a car trunk. As I drove around, the flatbed scanner was sliding back and forth on the main unit, which loosened and damaged the moving part over time.
Here is the REAL problem with this product: PC-170 was marketed as a portable model, but it was not designed to be portable. The footprint is too big. It is heavy compared to other portable units. And it has too many moving parts that can loosen and break if it is being moved around too frequently.
After I got the PC-170 back from the repair center, I used two belts to secure the slider onto the copier. In May 2010, the machine broke down again -- for the exact same reason. When I called Canon again, they told me it was out of warranty, and they could not (or would not) do anything with it. I was fine with it, because I had already decided I would never buy anything (photocopier, printer or camera) from Canon ever again.
Furthermore, the Canon PC-170 has a big footprint. It is too much of a hassle to be carried around. It took up quite a lot of space in my car trunk, and it was quite heavy to handle. The E20 toner cartridge is also quite expensive at $50 to $80.
If anyone is looking for a portable copier, a much better alternative is the smaller and lighter Brother FAX-575 Personal Fax/Phone/Copier. It uses a cheaper toner cartridge. Brother's services are also much better than Canon: I use a Brother multifunctional laser printer at home, and it also broke last year. Brother shipped a replacement unit overnight without the hassle Canon had given me. A brand new Brother FAX-575 costs only around $24. So if it breaks, I can just throw away the $23 instead of the $130 PC-170 whose toner cartridge costs another $50.
Canon CopierMay 03, 2010 My objective was to purchase a low price copy machine that was suited for low volume home use. Copier was shipped in a timely manner.
Set up instructions were easy to follow. I am pleased with the copy quality that I receive from this low price copy machine.

VERY GOOD FOR WHAT IT ISApr 17, 2010 If you are looking for a desk top photocopier that sees intermittent use, look no further. If you are looking for a copier that will do what a copying service does or has features like those in the "copy-coffee house", look elsewhere. I have used these small, flat-bed Cannon copiers at my office for over ten years. My receptionist and I use it to make copies of ID and Medical cards, and the forms that our patients need filled out. For this type of light service, you can't beat the unit. Its instant on, ready to copy feature is great; no warm up necessary. It turns itself off after a few minutes of disuse. Although the feeder and exit trays are somewhat flimsy, the rest of the unit is rather durable. The whole unit is quite portable: the trays fold up tidily, with the whole thing being the size of a briefcase. On your desk, it does not take up much space, with the trays folded. You can stack some junk/stuff on top of the machine and it still works. Any of you who work in a small office know that this happens all the time in tight spaces! Be aware that the copying bed does move across the top of the unit which can bump into other items, e.g. stapler, pencil holder, coffee mug, on your desk top. We had a 428 model; this was more expensive. We bought this one as it was less expensive and seemed to do all the same work. The PC428 lasted over 7 years without any repairs or upkeep whatsoever prior to the print quality deteriorating. I expect this one to last just as long as they are quite similar. The cost of the refill cartridge is a bit pricey, but a quick internet search will score a better deal than the local office supply store.
I had considered other copiers, with more features and capabilities to replace the worn out PC428, but they were either too expensive, too big, or otherwise too cumbersome to use. The copy quality is good enough for what we need. Again, for the occasional copy (20 times a day at our office) in a small office or home, this Cannon is tops.
